The state of Hawaii has strict regulations on the harvesting of black coral, and fishing is closely monitored. It is protected in the Mediterranean Sea area, India, and Indonesia. Black coral is listed on the CITES Appendices II, which lists species that are not currently threatened but need to be monitored and trade of the material controlled. The native Hawaiians used it to treat lung diseases and mouth sores. It has been found in ancient jewelry and religious objects in the Mediterranean area. It is also called “horn coral” or “king coral”. It can be bleached to create a golden color. Although pink sapphires may come in high-end prices, they are an ideal alternative to pink diamonds. It is black or very dark brown in color, and the branches have a spiny or tree like structure. Pink Sapphires are tough with a Mohs hardness of 9. It can be found worldwide but the most frequently studied are from tropical or subtropical waters. The order Antipatharia has approximately 265 species but only 13 are harvested for jewelry. Unlike calcareous coral it is made up of protein and chitin (a nitrogen-containing polysaccharide similar to insect exoskeletons). Sometimes the material will show scorched marks from volcanic activity.īlack coral is a common proteinaceous organic coral from the order Antipatharia. The color can be vibrant orange, salmon pink, pink, orange-red, and red. The branches are fan shaped and the trunk has a maximum diameter of 5mm. Most of the deposits in the area have been depleted but other pockets of similar coral have been found near Sardinia, Italy and off the coast of Malta and the Alboran Sea. Sciacca coral was very popular in 19th century Neapolitan jewelry and decorative objects. Studies have shown that the coral dates to between 27 BCE. Pockets of coral were found about 1870 and they were estimated to contain 14,000 tons of coral. Coral reefs grew up around the island, and due to different geological events, the coral branches were broken off and settled on the sea floor. The island is continually eroded away, and it is currently under water. Volcanic activity between 300 BCE and 1831 formed Ferdinandea Island off the coast of Sciacca, Sicily, Italy. While you can find some special statement pieces (large blue zircon rings are often flanked with diamonds - like the one above) as a typically inexpensive gemstone, zircon in a smaller stone works perfectly for a token promise ring while you hold out for the real rock.Dead coral or Sciacca coral is the name for the Corallium rubrum calcareous variety found from the Strait of Sicily. Found in a variety of colours, it differs with reddish brown, yellow, blue, green and colourless variations, the colour can be changed and enhanced with heat treatments. Zircon (not to be confused with the man-made cubic zirconia) is a crystal that sits at 7.5 on the Mohs scale. And Now, for the Ultimate A-Z of Gemstones. Likewise, some stones are heat-treated to make them more vibrant so talk to your jeweller about any effects that may have on the stone, and the price. But it is savvy to be aware of them, and know exactly what you're purchasing. There is nothing wrong with lab-grown gemstones, they look beautiful, they can be a sustainable option and they can often be more affordable than the natural stones. These are stones that, while created in a lab, display the same physical make-up as naturally occurring gemstones. These are old terms associated with rarity and value, and won't always be reflected in today's markets, as some stones get rarer and others decrease in value, but generally speaking, the 'big four' will be more expensive to purchase than the rest of the gems on our list. Most of the rest on the list are semi-precious stones. There are actually only four precious stones diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. Photo by Emilia Jane Photography via Style Me Pretty
